English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC)

What is ELAC?

ELAC stands for English Learner Advisory Committee.

It is a school-level committee comprised of parents, staff, and community members who dedicatedly support our English Learners (students learning English as an additional language). Every public school with 21 or more English Learners is required to form an ELAC.

The primary purpose of ELAC is to advise the school principal and staff on programs and services for English Learners. It provides a powerful voice for families to ensure their children receive the best possible education.

What Does ELAC Do?

ELAC members work together to advise the school administration on critical topics, including:

  • The development of the school’s plan for English Learner education.

  • The school's Needs Assessment (identifying what English Learner students and families need most).

  • The importance of regular school attendance.

  • How to distribute resources to best support language acquisition.

 

Why Should You Get Involved?

Getting involved with ELAC is one of the most effective ways to advocate for your child’s education and stay connected with the school community.

  • Be a Voice: You directly influence the decisions, programs, and funding that affect English Learners.

  • Stay Informed: Learn firsthand about school resources, graduation requirements, testing, and special programs.

  • Build Community: Connect with other families, share experiences, and meet school leaders in a welcoming, collaborative space.

  • Leadership Opportunities: Parents can be elected to leadership roles within ELAC, or represent the school at the district level (DELAC).

 

How to Get Involved

We welcome all parents and guardians to participate, regardless of what language you speak at home! Translators are always provided.

  • Attend Meetings: Combined ELAC/SSC meetings are held monthly throughout the school year. You do not need to be an elected member to attend—all parents are welcome.

  • Join the Committee: At the beginning of the school year, you can run for an elected position on the council or vote for your parent representatives.

  • Share Your Feedback: Even if you cannot attend every meeting, your input matters. You can submit questions, suggestions, or concerns to our coordinators at any time.
